How I Study- My Study Tips!

Hey Everyone!

I want to talk to you guys today about how I study. I know that a lot of students do not have to study much in high school and then when they reach college they either find that they do not know how to study or it takes them a little bit to adjust to how they need to study in college. So, I have made it through my first semester of college and learned a few things about studying, so today I thought that I would share some of my tips for you.
*Disclaimer- I am not claiming that these techniques will work for everyone, I am just sharing what has worked for me with you.*

Tip #1 Do Not Wait Until the Last Minute to Study!

Am I saying that you will not pass if you cram? No. I am just saying that it will keep you from getting really stressed out. Especially if you have multiple exams the next day. What I have found that works the best for me is when I study as I learn things, and add in the new stuff as I go. Let me explain, but my study technique kind of leads in to my next tip.

Tip #2 Figure Out What Study Technique Works Best For You and Do It!

Some people make study guides and read them over and over again. Some people study their notes, I use flash cards. Sometimes I make physical flashcards, but about 75% of the time I would say I use Quizlet. Quizlet is a website that I have been using since high school. Essentially you can make flashcards on there and then access them on your phone with their app or on your laptop. There are also games and things you can play to help you study. I like that they have an app because I always have my phone with me, so I can't use the excuse of "oh I don't have my stuff with me so i can't study." With the app on my phone I can study whenever I have some extra time, instead of playing on social media, or when I am laying in bed. Going back to what I said in the last section. Usually what I do is I make a set for each test, and as I learn new things I add flashcards and just continue to study the whole set of flashcards, so I learn the material gradually, can study the material anywhere , anytime and it is not nearly as stressful. Now, do I always do this? No. Do I wish I could say that is what I did? yes. That is definitely something that I am actively working on. Want to try Quizlet for yourself? It is free and you can check it out here.

Tip #3 Isolate Yourself When You Need to Study

This could mean going to the library, or putting on a pair of headphones that drown everything else out. You have to do what works for you. The main thing is just getting yourself into a mental state to where you can focus on what you need to study and actually study. For me sometimes I can focus by just putting on my Beats or going to my room. But sometimes I have to go to the library.

Tip #4 Eliminate Distractions

My two biggest distractions are people and my phone. So, the way I eliminate these distractions is by going to the library and putting my phone on do not disturb so that I do not get notifications. You do what works for you, those are just my biggest distractions and how I eliminate them.

Tip #5 Group Study Sessions are not Great for Everyone and if they do not Work for You that is okay

Some people swear by group study sessions. And, sometimes they are nice. However I personally have found that I can only have group study sessions with certain individuals because if not I get distracted and just end up wasting my time because I cannot focus. Figure out what works best for you and do it. You may be able to do the group study sessions, or you may not be able to focus, or maybe you can only do them with certain people.

Tip #6 Do Not Stress Too Much

As dumb as it sounds, try not to psych yourself up to much. College is about learning, chances are you are not going to get a perfect on every test and that is ok. You live and you learn, but you cannot let it stress you out too much. Study the best you can, give it your all, and relax, you got this!

So that is it, the bottom line is you learn what works for you through trial and error as you go, and once you figure out what works for you stick to it! I hope this post helped with some studying tips, I wish you the best of luck on your exams, you've got this! Thanks for reading this post, and I'll catch you in my next one!
